once i sat in the office of the head of my film school and said that i wanted to be put in the directing class instead of production because i could see myself slumming it at a crummy video store type job while i worked on getting my own film together much more than i could imagine being a prod assist with a steady job but no work of my own. the production tutor said i was an idiot and the directing tutor said she understood what i meant. i had a minor freak out about the future and my abilities and tried to get put in the production class the next day, because i thought the meeting was about convincing me to do that because they didn't think i could be a good film maker.
they wouldn't let me switch and they put me in the directing class.
four years and a degree after that meeting i am working at a store selling dvds and finally producing my first feature film. it is very terrifying but also exciting. i have lots of lovely friends who are helping me.
the film will be screened as part of the auckland fringe festival in february and march 2013. the scripts for the short films have been written by me and are being edited by my friend alice. then they will be given to people to workshop while me and my friend ruby and my friend ben and maybe some other really good film producing whizz kid friends will try and gather some money and then we'll all make a movie in january. i might put it in the wellington and dunedin fringe festivals too, and then maybe try and submit it to some actual film festivals and try and win some awards and kudos and stuff for everyone.
that'd be nice.
here is a thing about the film that i wrote for the festival website.
I
have a lot of friends that recently finished film school. Seeing a
large pool of talented people struggling to get their own projects
up, I decided to try making a feature length film comprised of
shorts, allowing all of these people to be involved in something big.
The
films aim to explore the idea of conversation - why, where, when we
do it, and how it affects us. In eleven vignettes, we see people
talking to each other in an attempt to make sense of themselves and
the world they're in. These conversations are a give-and-take not
only between the characters but also the film makers and their
audience. Every time we speak we reveal a wealth of information about
ourselves, yet none of us know how we will be interpreted.
Virginia
wants to buy a bird. Laura just had her last exam. Dan thinks Will is
nice. Alice is pregnant. Denny is sad. Peter might jump off a bridge.
Renee is trying. Zara thinks Rose is a hypocrite. Julie's mum is
dead. Bridget wants to be an actress. Karen hates pink.
Everyone
needs to talk. We all hope someone is listening.

More info please! For those of us overseas with only our imaginations to get us there.
